Steffan and Brennan Named Pepsi Zero MAAC Student-Athletes of the Week

Canisius redshirt-freshman Mike Steffan, who holds a 4.00 grade point average, has been a catalyst for the Golden Griffins baseball team through the first three weeks of the season. Solidifying himself as the Golden Griffins' leadoff hitter, Steffan picked up a hit in each of the Griffs' three games at Kentucky over the weekend. On Friday, Steffan tallied one hit and scored one of Canisius' three runs. Saturday saw the redshirt-freshman record two RBI off a single and a sacrifice fly in game one, following it with a double in game two. The first baseman was also perfect in the field, recording 20 putouts and two assists.
 
The week before, Steffan earned himself MAAC Rookie of the Week honors. The Griffs' first baseman posted a .429 batting average and .467 on-base percentage against Charlotte, going 6-for-14 with two doubles, four runs scored and an RBI. The Williamsville, N.Y., native also recorded a walk and a stolen base that weekend. For the season, Steffan is second on the team in batting average (.314) and walks (six), while scoring six runs, driving in four runs and notching three doubles. He is also reaching base at a .405 clip.

Serving as a team captain through the 2019 season, Brennan is tied for second on the team in scoring through the first five games of the year, having scored five goals and added seven assists. The Rochester, NY product has also collected nine ground balls, won four draw controls and caused a pair of turnovers this season.A MAAC Academic Honor Roll member in 2018, Brennan holds a 3.33 cumulative GPA while pursuing a degree in psychology.
