2019 Women’s Basketball Championship Quarterfinals

No. 1 Quinnipiac advances to the women’s semifinals after defeating No. 9 Fairfield 63-48. The Bobcats saw eight different players record points and relied on strong defensive play to help the team advance in the MAAC Championship. The Bobcats are winners of their last 50 games against MAAC opponents.

Quinnipiac Notes
  • Will play in the women’s semifinals on Sunday, March 5 at 11:00 a.m. against either No. 4 Monmouth University or No. 5 Canisius College
  • Quinnipiac came out of the gates hot, starting the game on a 12-0 run
  • The Bobcats used a 9-0 run and five minutes of shutout defense to build their lead to 15 entering the final frame  
  • Eight different players scored for the Bobcats with Aryn McClure, Jen Fay, and Brittany Martin leading the offense
  • Taylor Herd was named the 2018-19 MAAC Sixth Player of the Year earlier in the day at the MAAC Postseason Awards Show
  • Head coach Tricia Fabbri was named the 2018-19 MAAC The Rock Coach of the Year earlier in the day at the MAAC Postseason Awards Show
  • 50-straight MAAC wins for Quinnipiac
Fairfield Notes
  • Fairfield was held without a field goal for the first 4:55 of the game
  • After a slow first quarter, the Stags put up 17 points while shooting 50-percent from the field, outscoring Quinnipiac by two
  • The senior class led the Stags, with Casey Foley dropping 18 points, shooting 5-8 from beyond the arc, and Khadidiatou Diouf grabbing a team-high nine rebounds
  • Freshman Lou Lopez-Senechal, who scored 11 and grabbed six boards, was named the 2018-19 MAAC Rookie of the Year earlier in the day at the MAAC Postseason Awards Show

2019 Women’s Basketball Championship Quarterfinals

No. 2 Rider defeated No. 10 Iona 54-46 in dramatic fashion to advance to the women’s semifinals. The game was a tale of two halves, as the Gaels shot 57-percent on 7-12 from beyond the arc with Rider going 0-8 from deep in the first half. The Broncs then outscored the Gaels 20-4 in the third quarter to take the lead heading into the final frame. From that point on, the lead remained in Rider’s favor to the final buzzer.

Rider Notes
  • Will play in the women’s semifinals on Sunday, March 5 at 1:30 p.m. against either No. 3 Marist College or No. 6 Manhattan College
  • Rider struggled from three-point range in the first half, not making a single shot on eight attempts
  • The Broncs began the second half by outscoring the Gaels 20-4 in the third quarter
  • Stella Johnson recorded a double-double, scoring 20 and collecting 12 rebounds for the Broncs. Earlier in the day, Johnson was named the 2018-19 MAAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Year at the MAAC Postseason Awards Show
  • Lea Favre collected her own double-double by recording 10 points and 10 rebounds
Iona Notes
  • Iona got to work early, building a 13-point lead midway through the second quarter and extending it to 15 by the half
  • The Gaels shot 46.2-percent from the field and 58.3-percent from three-point range in the first half, but only 27.3-percent and 18.2-percent in the second half
  • The team came out of the locker room cold, shooting 10-percent and scoring only four points in the third. The Gaels went on a 6:31 stretch without recording a point
  • Shyan Mwai led the Gaels in scoring with 19 points, Tori Lesko grabbed 10 rebounds
 
The MAAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships will take place March 7-11 at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY. The women’s first round, quarterfinal, and semifinal games will all be aired on ESPN3. The championship game is set for Monday, March 11 at 2:30 p.m. and will be aired on ESPNU.
