Marist and Monmouth Join Quinnipiac and Rider in MAAC Women’s Semifinals

2019 Women’s Basketball Championship Quarterfinals

No. 3 Marist punched their ticket to the MAAC Championship Semifinals with a 65-51 win over No. 6 Manhattan. The Red Foxes advance to their 14th MAAC Championship Semifinal under head coach Brian Giorgis, where they will look to make it back to the Championship game for the second year in a row.

Marist Notes
  • Will play in the MAAC Semifinals on Sunday, March 9 at 1:30 p.m. against No. 2 Rider University
  • The win gave Marist a 2-1 advantage over Manhattan in the season series
  • All-MAAC First Team selection Alana Gilmer scored the first 14 points (6-6) for Marist within the first five minutes. Gilmer cooled after the stretch however, only scoring an additional two points before heading in for the half. Gilmer finished the game with 25 points and five rebounds
  • After starting the game shooting 57.1-percent in the first quarter, the Red Foxes shot only 33.3-percent in the second quarter. The Red Foxes’ struggles continued in the start of the second half, shooting 35.3-percent in the third quarter before closing the game strong shooting 55.6-percent in the fourth
  • All-MAAC First Team selection Rebekah Hand was held without a field goal (0-3) in the first half. Hand finished the game with two points, seven rebounds, and four assists
  • Grace Vander Weide and Lovisa Henningsdottir also finished with double-digits, scoring 13 and 10 respectively
Manhattan Notes
  • The Jaspers were held to only six points during an 11-minute stretch between the first and second quarters
  • Heading into the final frame, Manhattan was 0-10 from beyond the arc. The Jaspers finished the game only 2-13 from three
  • The MAAC Defensive Player of the year Courtney Warley collected a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds
  • Lynette Taitt led all Manhattan scorers with 14 points

2019 Women’s Basketball Championship Quarterfinals

No. 4 Monmouth defeated No. 5 Canisius 64-53 to advance to the Semifinals of the MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship. The game featured nine lead changes and went into the fourth quarter of play tied at 44 apiece. The Hawks relied on strong defensive play in the final frame to help secure the win and advance to tomorrow’s game.
 
Monmouth Notes
  • Will play in the women’s semifinals on Sunday, March 5 at 11 a.m. against No. 1 Quinnipiac University
  • The win marks the second year in a row the Hawks defeated the Golden Griffins in the semifinals
  • The win gives Monmouth the 2-1 advantage in the season series with Canisius
  • Nine different players scored for the Hawks
  • The Hawks went 0-10 from beyond the arc in the first half and 4-22 throughout the game
  • MAAC All-Rookie selection Lucy Thomas scored the first seven points for the Hawks, finishing with a team leading 18 points with nine rebounds
  • Alexa Middleton recorded a double-double, putting up 14 points and grabbing 12 boards for the Hawks
  • The game was ended on a 12-3 Monmouth run
Canisius Notes
  • Entering today, the Golden Griffins were 10-1 when leading after the first half
  • Canisius struggled in the final stages of the game, shooting 18.8-percent (3-16) in the fourth quarter, scoring nine points in total
  • The team was a perfect 14-14 from the free throw line
  • All-MAAC Second Team selection Sara Hinriksdottir was limited to eight points with seven rebounds and one assist
  • D’Jhai Patterson-Ricks scored 10 of her team-leading 13 points in the third quarter
  • All-MAAC Second Team selection Sierra Green was limited to two points in the first half, scoring five for the entirety of the game
The MAAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships will take place March 7-11 at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY. The women’s first round, quarterfinal, and semifinal games will all be aired on ESPN3. The championship game is set for Monday, March 11 at 2:30 p.m. and will be aired on ESPNU.
