Iona and Albany Lead After Round One of 2019 MAAC Golf Championships

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL – At the end of round one at the 2019 MAAC Golf Championships, the men’s and women’s defending champions find themselves in familiar positions on top of the leaderboards. Iona College leads the men’s field at 289 (+1) and the University at Albany paces the women’s field at 300 (+12).
 
Iona was led by junior Oisin Devereux with a 68 (-4). Devereux’s score stands as the top individual performance after round one. The junior sank six birdies in his round. Kritsarin Oukosavanna also had a strong showing for the Gaels, posting a 72 (E) which puts him tied for seventh.
 
Saint Peter’s University is in second place at the end of the day, finishing three strokes behind Iona with a score of 292 (+4). The Peacocks were led by sophomore Jeffrey Peters, who posted a three-under 69, just one stroke behind Devereux in second. Peters finished the day with four birdies. Freshman Melvin Morales and junior Mike Winter also showed well for Saint Peter’s, finishing tied for seventh and 10th, respectively. The Peacocks carded a round-high 17 birdies on the day.
 
Rider University finished in third on the day at 293 (+4), followed by Canisius College, which posted a 298 (+10). Siena College carded a 300 (+12), with Monmouth University finishing in sixth with a 306 (+18). Fairfield University carded a 308 (+20), trailed closely by Manhattan College in eighth with a score of 309 (+21). Rounding out the men’s group was Niagara University with a 325 (+37).
 
For the women, the University at Albany finished with four golfers in the top 10, including the individual leader, Annika Espino. The junior carded a 73 (+1), as well as finishing with the most birdies among any women’s player with four. Albany’s other top finishers included Madison Walker who is tied for second with a 74 (+2), Helga Einarsdottir is tied for sixth at four-over, and Megan Henry who is tied for eighth at five-over. The Great Danes finished round one with more birdies of any women’s team (11).
 
The University of Dayton finished the day in second with a score of 306 (+18). Three Flyers placed in the top 10 at the end of the first round; Sarah Frazier and Abby Bitto tied for fourth with a score of 75 (+3), and Ellie Cronin tied for sixth with a 76 (+4). Dayton led the field in pars, totaling 57 on the day.
 
Quinnipiac University concluded the day in third with 312 (+24), followed by Siena in fourth with a score of 324 (+36). The University of Hartford finished fifth at 325 (+37), with Niagara following in sixth with 330 (+42). Monmouth carded a 336 (+48), followed closely by Fairfield with 337 (+49). Rounding out the women’s side is La Salle University at 366 (+78).
 
Tee times have been moved up to 7:00 a.m. for round 2 on Friday, April 19. The women will tee off on the first hole, with the men teeing off the 10th. For information regarding the 2019 MAAC Golf Championships, visit maacsports.com/golf.
