Marist’s Phippen Named a Top 25 Schutt Sports NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year

Calista Phippen of Marist College has been named a Top 25 2019 Schutt Sports National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Divison I National Freshman of the Year. Phippen is the second Marist and MAAC student-athlete to be named to the list, the other being infielder Claire Oberdorf in 2016.
The Schutt Sports NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year award was created in 2014 to honor outstanding athletic achievement among Division I freshmen softball student-athletes. On May 9, the list will be trimmed down to the top 10 and the top three finalists will be released on May 21. The Schutt Sports NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year trophy will be presented during a live ceremony at the Women's College World Series banquet on May 28.
A native of Kinderhook, New York, Phippen currently sports a 1.29 ERA with a 14-3 record through 119.0 innings pitched, striking out 137 batters. She leads the MAAC in ERA and sits in second place for wins, innings pitched, and strikeouts. Phippen has been named the MAAC Pitcher of the Week two times and MAAC Rookie of the Week three times so far this season. The rookie has had a major impact in leading the Red Foxes to third place in the MAAC standings where the team currently has an overall record of 24-19 and a 9-3 MAAC record.
The 2019 MAAC Softball Championship is set to take place May 8-11, hosted by the No. 1 seed. The championship features the league’s top six team in a double elimination tournament. For more information on MAAC softball, visit
