Round Two Suspended Due to Weather; Iona and Albany Remain on Top at 2019 MAAC Golf Championships

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL – Iona College and the University at Albany continued to lead at the 2019 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships, but the second round was suspended due to heavy storms in the area. Iona leads the men’s field at 472 (+7) and the University at Albany paces the women’s field at 537 (+33).
 
For the men, Iona, Saint Peter’s University, and Rider University have three holes remaining in round two. All other schools have completed their second rounds.
 
Oisin Devereux built upon his performance from round one for the Gaels. Devereux tallied a score of 130 (-1) through 15 holes of his second round. Devereux’s score lands him in second place at the end of the day. The junior leads the field in birdies with nine, including a 40-foot putt on the 18th hole—his ninth—in today’s round. Senior captain Paolo Matti, sophomore Justin Burkhamer, and sophomore Kritsarin Oukosavanna all performed well for the Maroon and Gold today, with all three tied for sixth at 135 (+4) through 15.
 
Saint Peter’s remains in second place at the conclusion of day two, finishing seven strokes behind Iona through 15. Jeffrey Peters moved up from second to first in during round two, where he is +1 through 15. Peters has recorded seven birdies and an eagle in the championship. Junior Mike Winter finished the day tied for eleventh after posting a 136 (+5) through 15. The Peacocks finished day two with a round-high 29 birdies.
 
Rider finished in third on the day at +15. Siena College moved up to fourth at the end of round two, closing out the day +26, tailed closely by Canisius College with 605 (+29). Fairfield University also moved up one spot in the standings, finishing round two at 613 (+37), followed by Monmouth University with 618 (+42). Manhattan College trails the Hawks by just one stroke, concluding round two in eighth, with Niagara University ending the day in ninth at +74.
 
On the women’s side, Albany, Quinnipiac University, and the University of Dayton each have two players through 12 holes and three players through 15 at the end of round two. Siena College, the University of Hartford, and Niagara University each have two players through 15, with three players from each school having finished the round.
 
Albany continued their success from round one, once again finishing with four golfers in the top 10. Through 12 holes in the second round, Annika Espino and Madison Walker proved to be Albany’s top players, each finishing tied for third at 127 (+7). Both players have also carded four birdies over the course of the championship. Through 15 holes, Helga Einarsdottir ended the day in ninth at +9 and Megan Henry finished tied for tenth at +10. The Great Danes continue to lead in birdies, with 17 at the end of day two.
 
Quinnipiac improved on their showing in round one, moved into second on the day at +43. Sophomore Queenie Lai moved into first after shooting even par through 12 in round two to finish the day at two-over when play was suspended. Lai was the only women’s golfer to shoot par or better on the day. Joining Lai in the top 10 is teammate Luciana Tobia-Palza, who is tied for tenth at 130 (+10) through 12 in the second round.
 
Dayton finished in third with 549 (+45), with Siena following in fourth at +64. The University of Hartford maintained its position in fifth with 629 (+77), followed by Niagara which finished +88. Fairfield improved its position to seventh after carding a 672 (+96), and Monmouth ended the day in eighth with 681 (+105). La Salle University is in ninth with a tally of 738 (+162).
