Iona Men Win Second Straight MAAC Golf Championship; Fifth in Program History

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL – Iona College won its second MAAC Men’s Golf Championship in as many years Saturday. The Gaels led the men’s field with a score of 887 (+7) to by seven shots. Iona now hold the most MAAC Golf Championships of any current men’s program—five.
 
The champions finished with four players in the top 10. Junior Oisin Devereux posted the best score for the Maroon and Gold on the weekend, concluding the championship tied for second at 219 (+3). Justin Burkhamer and Paolo Matti each ended the weekend tied for fifth at +6, with Kritsarin Oukosavanna finishing in seventh with 224.
 
Jeffrey Peters from Saint Peter’s University won the 2019 McLeod Trophy. Peters finished as the only men’s golfer to shoot under-par with 215 (-1). The last time a men’s individual champion finished under-par was in 2016, when his coach, Nick Dilio, shot a 212 (-4). The sophomore performance helped the Peacocks finish second (894) , with the best round three score in the men’s field at +6.
 
Siena College’s Jared Nelson earned MAAC Men’s Rookie of the Year honors. Nelson had an impressive showing at his first MAAC Championship, finishing tied for second at +3. The first-year Saint was the only men’s golfer to shoot under-par in round three, carding a -1.
 
Rider University, who finished in third, finished the weekend with the lowest three-round championship score in program history with a 904 (+40).
