Monmouth Claims 2019 MAAC Men’s Tennis Regular Season Title

EDISON, NJ – Monmouth University (16-1, 6-0) has clinched the top seed for the 2019 MAAC Men’s Tennis Championship today with a 7-0 win over Niagara University (1-16, 1-5). The Hawks will be the No. 1 seed for the fifth year in a row.
 
The Hawks picked up singles victories from Srdjan Jakovljevic in the No. 1 spot, Max Benaim in the No. 2 spot, Will Cooke Wharton in the No. 3 spot, Sergio Martinez in the No. 4 spot, Alberto Giuffrida in the No. 5 spot, and Austin Klapman in the No. 6 spot. The Hawks picked the doubles point from the pairings of Jakovljevic and Giuffrida in the No. 2 spot and Klapman and Sasha Pachnev in the No. 3 spot. The pairing of Benaim and Martinez also won their match in the No. 1 spot. With the win, the Hawks have now won their last 14 matches and have outscored opponents 86-7 over the course of the streak.
 
The Hawks have won the MAAC title three-straight years and have made the championship match the last five years. In last year’s tournament, Monmouth defeated Fairfield University 4-0 in the semifinals before topping Marist College 4-0 the next day to claim the MAAC title.  
 
The 2019 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Championship will be held at Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, New Jersey. Semifinal action begins Saturday, April 27 and the finals take place Sunday, April 28. For more information on the 2019 MAAC Tennis Championships, visit maacsports.com/tennis.
