2019 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships Preview
WEST WINDSOR, NJ – The 2019 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships are set to start on Saturday, April 27 at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, New Jersey. The competition will begin at 10 a.m. with the women’s semifinals followed by the men’s semifinals at 2 p.m.
Quinnipiac University (10-3, 6-0 MAAC) heads to West Windsor as the No. 1 seed on the women’s side, undefeated in MAAC play. The Bobcats are riding a 53-conference game winning streak, the longest such streak in Division I Tennis. To collect the team’s sixth-straight title, the Bobcats will need to push that streak to 55. As the top seed, the Bobcats will face No. 4 Siena College (10-9, 3-3). The Saints this year were able to capture wins over Monmouth University, Niagara University, and Rider University. The last matchup between these two foes saw the Bobcats get the better part of the Saints with a 6-1 win on their home courts.
The No. 2 seed on the women’s side belongs to Fairfield University (12-7, 5-1). The only loss the Stags suffered in conference play this season came from the hands of Quinnipiac, almost breaking the Regular Season Champion’s winning streak before falling 4-3. The Stags will face No. 3 Marist College (7-14, 4-2) in the first round on Saturday. The Red Foxes gave the Stags a tough match when the teams met back on April 11, with Fairfield taking the match 4-3.
On the men’s side, Monmouth (16-1, 6-0) claimed the MAAC Regular Season Title after going undefeated in conference play. The only Hawks loss on the season came against Navy back on February 9. To claim the school’s fourth consecutive title, the Hawks will first need to first prevail over No. 4 Fairfield (6-15, 3-3). The Stags return to the MAAC Championship after defeating Siena College in a “win and you’re in” match to close the regular season. The last meeting between these two championship contenders resulted in a 7-0 Monmouth victory on April 6.
The final teams on the men’s side are No. 2 Marist (11-9, 5-1) and No. 3 Quinnipiac (8-12, 4-2). The Red Foxes look to make the Championship Match for the third consecutive year, while the Bobcats look to make it to the big final for the first time since 2016. The last meeting between the two teams resulted in a 6-1 Marist victory on April 10.
