Rider’s Johnson and Marist’s Hand and Gilmer Named to All-Met Teams
EDISON, NJ – Three players from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference were named to Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Division I Women’s Basketball All-Met Teams. Stella Johnson of Rider University and Rebekah Hand of Marist College were named to the All-Met First Team, while Marist’s Alana Gilmer was named to the All-Met Third Team. The All-Met First and Second Team players, plus the coach and rookie of the year, will be honored Tuesday, April 30, at the 86th NIT/MBWA Haggerty Awards dinner at the Westchester Marriott, Tarrytown, NY.
Rider’s Johnson was named the 2018-19 MAAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Year, as well as a member of the All-MAAC First Team. The junior guard led the league in scoring (18.6) as well as steals (2.7). The Bronc was also second in the league in assists (4.5), three-point percentage (.391), and was fifth in field goal percentage (.457). Johnson was named MAAC Player of the Week six times throughout the season. Johnson led the Broncs to a second-place finish in the regular season and to the semifinals in the MAAC Championship, being named to the All-Championship Team.
Marist’s Hand and Gilmer are both also coming off of strong seasons. Hand led the league in free throw percentage (.940) for the second-straight year. The senior strung together a streak of 62 consecutive free throws, the fourth longest streak in NCAA history. Hand was also third in the league in scoring (16.6), tenth in rebounding (5.9), sixth in field goal percentage (.447), and first in three-point percentage (.399). Gilmer ranked fourth in the league in scoring (15.3) and third in field goal percentage (.482). The junior was an offensive leader on a team that led the MAAC in scoring. Both players were named to the All-MAAC First Team prior to the 2019 MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship.
