Monmouth and Quinnipiac to Play for 2019 MAAC Men’s Tennis Championship Title
West Windsor, NJ – The 2019 Men’s Tennis Championship Match has been determined, with No. 1 Monmouth University advancing to take on No. 3 Quinnipiac tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Monmouth advances to the MAAC Championship Match for the sixth-straight year after a 4-0 victory over No. 4 Fairfield University. The Hawks got off to an early start, grabbing the doubles point with wins from the pairings of Max Benaim and Sergio Martinez in the No. 1 spot and Srdjan Jakovljevic and Alberto Giuffrida in the No. 3 spot, 6-1 and 6-0 respectively. The Hawks then went on to claim the next three points in straight sets. Monmouth’s Benaim was the first to secure a victory, defeating Fairfield’s Allan Magid 6-0, 6-2. Following close behind was senior captain Nicola Pipoli with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lewis Edwards. The final Hawk to grab a match and propel Monmouth to the championship match was William Cooke Wharton, defeating Jeffrey Rodgers 6-0, 6-3. The Hawks will look for their fourth-consecutive title in tomorrow’s match.
Quinnipiac advanced to the championship match with a 4-1 win over Marist College. The Bobcats picked up the doubles point with wins from Axel Stern and Aleksa Matinovic in the No. 1 spot and Freddie Zaretsky and Austin Yannone in the No. 3 spot. Quinnipiac took a 2-0 lead soon after with Heikle Moore’s 7-5, 6-1 win from the No. 3 spot before Marist was able to grab its lone point from Lars Schouten’s 6-2, 6-2 win over Zaretsky. The Bobcats were able to close the match out as the last two points were picked up by Patrick Cachapero and Alester Magalit. Cachapero defeated Marist’s Kian Yazdi 7-5, 6-3 while Magalit defeated John Oxner 6-2, 7-5 to send Quinnipiac to the MAAC Championship Game for the first time since 2016. The Bobcats will look for their fist first MAAC title in school history tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
The 2019 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship will be held at Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, New Jersey.
