Monmouth Claims Fourth-Straight MAAC Men’s Tennis Championship
West Windsor, NJ – No. 1 Monmouth University defeated No. 3 Quinnipiac University by a final score of 4-0. The victory marks the fourth consecutive MAAC title for the Hawks, who will move on to play in the NCAA Tournament. The 2019 Men’s Tennis Most Outstanding Performer was Monmouth’s Nicola Pipoli.
The Hawks started the afternoon by claiming the doubles point. Srdjan Jakovljevic and partner Alberto Giuffrida grabbed the first point from the No. 3 spot with a 6-2 win over Quinnipiac’s Freddie Zaretsky and Austin Yannone. From the No. 2 spot, Max Benaim and Sergio Martinez clinched their match, and the doubles point, with a 6-2 win over Patrick Cachapero and Hiekle Moore.
The Hawks then went to work quickly on the singles side. 2019 Men’s Player of the Year Srdjan Jakovljevic captured Monmouth’s second point from the No. 1 spot after a match penalty was assessed to Quinnipiac. Martinez claimed the third point for the Hawks shortly thereafter, taking down Cachapero of the Bobcats 6-0, 6-2 from the No. 5 spot. The championship point was decided from the No. 2 spot, where Monmouth team captain Nicola Pipoli claimed a 6-3, 6-4 win over Aleksa Martinovic. At the time of completion, Monmouth’s Benaim, Wharton, and Giuffrida were all leading their respective matches.
The Hawks will now wait to see who they play in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The selection show airs tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. and can be viewed at
