Monmouth Men’s Tennis to Face Penn State in First Round of NCAA Championship

Edison, NJ – Monmouth University (18-1, 6-0 MAAC) will face Penn State (19-8, 8-3) in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championships. The Hawks are coming off the school’s fourth-straight MAAC Championship title. The first round match will take place Friday, May 3 at 10 a.m. at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
 
The Hawks defeated Quinnipiac University 4-0 in yesterday’s MAAC Tennis Championship to claim the title and a NCAA Championship birth. The Most Outstanding Performer for the Hawks was senior captain Nicola Pipoli, who clinched the final point in Monmouth’s win with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Quinnipiac’s Aleksa Martinovic.
 
Earlier in the week, the Hawks swept All-MAAC First Team honors and collected two major awards. On the doubles side, Alberto Giuffrida and Srdjan Jakovljevik claimed the No. 3 spot, Max Benaim and Sergio Martinez claimed the No. 2 spot, and Will Cooke Wharton and Nicola Pipoli took home the No. 1 spot. On the singles side, Giuffrida claimed the No. 6 spot, Martinez claimed the No. 5 spot, Cooke Wharton claimed the No. 4 spot, Benaim claimed the No. 3 spot, Pipoli claimed the No. 2 spot, and Srdjan Jakovljevic claimed the No. 1 singles spot. Jakovljevic was named the 2019 MAAC Men’s Tennis Player of the Year and head coach Chris Leicht was named the 2019 MAAC Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year.
