2019 MAAC Men's Lacrosse Championship Preview
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The 2019 MAAC Men's Lacrosse Championship starts Thursday, May 2 at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field on the campus of Marist College.
Thursday's two semifinals will air on ESPN+ at 4 and 7 p.m. with Saturday's championship game airing on ESPNU at 10 a.m.
Marist (8-6, 6-1 MAAC) enters as the regular season champion and the top seed. The Red Foxes eye their first title since 2015, which came on their home field.
Second-seeded Quinnipiac University (8-6, 5-2) and third-seeded University of Detroit Mercy (8-6, 5-2) will meet in the first semifinal at 4 p.m. on Thursday. Quinnipiac was MAAC Champions back in 2016, and Detroit Mercy last won a MAAC Championship in 2013. Quinnipiac won the regular season meeting between the two, 12-9, back on March 16. Both team's seasons ended in overtime at last season's championship; Quinnipiac's in the semifinals and Detroit Mercy's in the championship game.
Taking on Marist in the other semifinal is No. 4 Canisius College (8-7, 4-3) at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Canisius is the defending champions as the Golden Griffins topped both Quinnipiac and Detroit Mercy in overtime in 2018. Marist and Canisius last met in the semifinals in 2017 when the Red Foxes beat the Golden Griffins, 8-5. Marist took the regular season meeting between the two, 10-8, in the regular season finale for both.
Canisius claimed the title last season as the fourth seed. That snapped a streak of four straight years that the top seed had won the MAAC Championship. Canisius is seeking to become the first back-to-back champion since former member Providence College pulled it off in 2006 and 2007. A championship this weekend would be the fifth all-time for Marist, the fourth for Canisius and Detroit Mercy, and the third for Quinnipiac.
