Detroit Mercy's Vangalen Tabbed Google Cloud Academic All-District® 5 For Men’s At-Large
DETROIT, MI -- University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse senior Matthew Vangalen broke a few Titan records off the field, but his work in the classroom was not ignored as he was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District® 5 For Men's At-Large sports. He was one of only five men's lacrosse student-athletes selected over the eight districts in Division I.
The 2018-19 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Men's At-Large Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the athletic realm and in the classroom. The at-large sports are comprised of women's beach volleyball, women's bowling, women's crew/rowing, men's and women's fencing, women's field hockey, men's and women's golf, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's rifle, men's and women's skiing, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo and men's wrestling.
Vangalen was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-MAAC, the first Titan to earn the MAAC Offensive Player of the Year accolade and ended his career as a three-time All-League player. He broke his own school record with 55 points on the year on 19 goals and a career-high and school record 32 assists and finished his Titan career with a school-record 77 assists and is second in school history with 153 points and third with 76 goals.
He helped the Titans post back-to-back winnings campaigns and a program-best nine wins in 2018.
Off the field, he was a tabbed to the MAAC All-Academic team twice and was a three-time member of the Detroit Mercy Athletic Director's honor roll and the MAAC Academic honor roll as he sported a 3.96 GPA in Accounting & Finance.
He is the first Titan student-athlete to make an at-large team since Mikhial Pasic of the men's golf team in 2008 and will now move onto the ballot for Academic All-America.
The Google Cloud Academic All-America® program separately recognizes outstanding student-athletes in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA. First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team (if applicable) Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in June.
The Google Cloud Academic All-District® teams include the student-athletes listed on the following pages and are divided into geographic districts across the United States and Canada, with district 5 covering Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio.
