Monmouth Falls to Penn State in First Round of NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship

Flushing, NY – Monmouth University (18-2, 6-0 MAAC) fell to Penn State University (20-8, 8-3 Big Ten) 4-0 in the opening round of the 2019 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship. The Hawks were coming off of the team’s fourth-straight MAAC Championship.  
 
Penn State started the match off by taking the doubles point. The pairing of Max Benaim and Sergio Martinez fell to the Nittany Lions’ Christian Lakoseljac and Christos Antonopoula 6-1 in the No. 2 spot. Penn State clinched the doubles point with a win from the No. 3 duo of Matt Galush and Ben Lieb 6-2 over Monmouth’s Srdjan Jakovljevic and Alberto Guiffrida.
 
On the singles side, Penn State picked up the second point of the match with a 6-1, 6-1 finish from Ben Lieb over Sergio Martinez in the No. 5 spot. The Nittany Lions’ next point came from a 6-3, 6-2 finish from Christian Lakoseljac in the No. 2 spot over the Hawks’ Nicola Pipoli. The match was clinched with a 6-1, 6-2 win from Constant De La Basse in the No. 1 spot over Srdjan Jakovljevic.
