Fairfield Captures Second-Straight MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Championship in Overtime

Fairfield University (15-3, 8-0) defeated Siena College (12-7, 6-2) in an overtime thriller by a final score of 10-9 to claim the school’s second-straight MAAC Championship. Kelly Horning scored the sudden victory goal with 33 seconds remaining on the clock in overtime to give Fairfield the title. The overtime contest marked the first time a MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Championship Game went to extra time since 2007. The game remained close for both teams, with no side leading by more than two goals at any point. Meaghan Graham of Fairfield was named the 2019 MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Championship Most Valuable Player, posting two goals and four assists in the final game.
Fairfield will move on to play in the 2019 NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championships. The Stags will learn their opponent tomorrow night during the NCAA Selection Show at 8:00 p.m., streaming on
ncaa.com.
Fairfield Notes
- Fairfield’s scoring began with Kelly Horning’s early goal, just over a minute after Siena jumped out to a 1-0 lead
- Taylor Mitchell’s game-tying goal with 48 seconds remining in the first half sent momentum back to the Stags heading into the locker room
- The Stags did not lead during the first half
- After no goals were scored for the first 12:22 of the second half, Fairfield opened up the scoring to take a 7-6 lead
- Horning, who scored the first goal, would also score the last for the Stags to clinch the title
- Freshman goalkeeper Oliva Conquest made 14 saves in the outing, only allowing nine through for a save percentage of .609
- The Stags improved to 7-0 on the season in games decided by one goal
Siena Notes
- Kaitlyn Dowsett started the scoring for the Saints, netting the first goal within the first minute of play
- Kerry Gerety assisted all of Siena’s first three goals
- Siena did not trail during the first half, with the team’s largest lead being two goals
- Scoring for the Saints in the second half started with McNeely’s fourth of the afternoon to tie the game at seven with just over 16 minutes remaining
- Down two goals with under five minutes left, Gerety found the back of the net twice in a two-minute span to tie the game for the Saints
- Nicole McNeely led the Saints in scoring, grabbing four of Siena’s nine goals
- 2019 MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year Sammy Horton made 11 saves for the Saints
