2019 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship Opening Round

Fairfield (15-4) fell to Wagner (16-3) by a final score of 15-13 in the Opening Round of the 2019 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship. After leading for the duration of the first half, the Stags fell behind midway through the second on a four-goal run from the Seahawks. Wagner will move on to face No. 7 Princeton University in the First Round of the NCAA Championship.
Fairfield Notes
- Fairfield started the game off with the first two goals in just under three minutes
- The Stags grabbed their largest lead of the first half after a three-goal run that took just over two minutes, with two goals from Brooke Gallagher and one from Kelly Horning
- Fairfield did not trail in the first half and led by as many as three goals
- Taylor Mitchell notched her second-straight 40-goal season after scoring at the 25:15 mark in the second half
- Gallagher led the Stags with six points, scoring three times and grabbing three assists
- Diana DeVita found the back of the net for the Stags three times as well, adding an additional assist
Wagner Notes
- Wagner’s first goal was scored by Megan Drum at the 25:21 mark of the first half
- The Seahawks were able to collect the final two goals of the first half with scores from Drum and Erin Kerstetter
- Wagner took its first lead of the day after a goal from Drum, her fourth of the day, at the 19:43 mark of the second half. Drum’s goal capped a four-goal scoring run for the Seahawks
- The game-winning goal would come from Kerstetter at the 6:49 mark in the second half, with Maria Henwood adding an insurance goal with 2:57 left to play
- Kerstetter led the Seahawks with seven points, scoring four times and adding three helpers
- Drum led the team in goals with five
