MAAC Institutions Continue to Achieve Success in Annual NCAA APR Report
EDISON, NJ – MAAC student-athletes continue to succeed in the classroom at high levels as evidenced in the NCAA's latest report on Academic Progress Rates (APR). Eleven league sports saw an increase in their average rate, while 14 sports were above the national average.
According to the 2017-18 data, 47 squads achieved perfect APR scores—33 women’s and 14 men’s. Siena College led all MAAC institutions with nine teams earning a perfect mark (1,000). Marist College and Quinnipiac University each had seven, while Fairfield University had six teams achieve a perfect rate. Five programs from Niagara University and four from Iona College recorded flawless scores. Manhattan registered two teams while Canisius College, Monmouth University, Rider University, and Saint Peter's University each had one squad earn a score of 1,000.
"The MAAC and its members take pride in their student-athletes' work in the classroom. The success of our multiyear APR reflects their dedication to their areas of study away from competition," said MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor. "Congratulations to all the teams and programs for their continued success in the classroom."
Women's tennis had the highest multiyear average at 995. Five MAAC women's tennis programs recorded a perfect rate; Fairfield, Marist, Niagara, Quinnipiac, and Siena.
Baseball and women's tennis had the most improvement (+4) in men's and women's sports respectively. Additionally, men's basketball made a two-point gain to 970, and women's basketball held steady at 992. Overall, the MAAC as a whole had a two-point increase.
Of the 14 sports that were better than the NCAA average, baseball was 12 points better than the national mark, which was the highest difference in the MAAC. Women's basketball and men's outdoor track and field were plus-10 compared to the rest of Division I. Moreover, four other sports were at least five points greater than their Division I peers.
The APR, created to provide more of real-time measurement of academic success than graduation success rates offer, is a team-based metric where scholarship student-athletes earn one point each term for remaining eligible and one point for staying in school or graduating. Schools that don't offer scholarships track their recruited student-athletes. The multiyear APR reflects NCAA Division I APR data submitted by schools for the 2014-15 through 2017-18 academic years.
