Quinnipiac Beats Top Seed East Carolina in NCAA Baseball Regional

Quinnipiac (30-27) knocked off 10th-ranked and host East Carolina (43-16) 5-4 on Saturday in the Greenville Regional. It is the first win by a MAAC school in the NCAA Championship since 2014 when Siena College beat Dallas Baptist University.
Quinnipiac Notes
• The Bobcats pick up their first NCAA win in program history and will play Campbell University tomorrow in the winner’s bracket at 4 p.m.
• Quinnipiac is the first MAAC team to beat a top seed of a regional since Manhattan College topped the University of Nebraska in 2006.
• Liam Scafariello provided the game-winning hit with a two-run home run in the top of the seventh to make it 5-3 Bobcats.
• Chris Enns went 6.2 innings allowing three runs—one earned—and striking out six to earn the win.
• Colin Donnelly pitched the final 2.1 innings in relief to earn the save.
• The Bobcats scored twice in the first to take a 2-0 lead. The first run came on an RBI groundout from Ian Ostberg and a solo homer from Evan Vulgamore.
• Quinnipiac added a run in the third before Scafariello’s blast in the seventh.
East Carolina Notes
• East Carolina will play North Carolina State University in an elimination game Sunday at 12 p.m.
• Bryson Worrell connected for a solo home run in the eighth to make it 5-4.
• The Pirates had runners at first and second with two outs in the ninth when the game ended on a fielder’s choice.
• Bryant Packard had a team-high three hits and scored once.
• Evan Voliva took the loss for East Carolina after surrendering the homer to Scafariello.
• The Pirates had tied the game in the bottom of the first 2-2 and then 3-3 in the fourth.
