Five MAAC Baseball Student-Athletes Named to 2019 ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Team
EDISON, NJ – Five Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) student-athletes were named to ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Teams as announced by the organization.
Marist College’s Anthony Lazar was the sole MAAC selection for the 2019 Northeast All-Region First Team. Fairfield University’s Jack Gethings, Marist’s Tyler Kapuscinski, Niagara University’s Matthew Brash, and Quinnipiac University’s Andre Marrero all received Second Team honors.
Lazar finished the 2019 season with a .333 batting average along with seven home runs, 27 RBIs and 19 stolen bases. Teammate Tyler Kapuscinski led the MAAC this season with a .366 batting average. Both players were voted to the All-MAAC First Team at the conclusion of the 2019 regular season.
Fairfield’s Jack Gethings was named the MAAC Player of the Year after setting a new program record for hits in a single season with 88 and had the second-highest batting average in the MAAC this year at .364. Gethings finished his Fairfield career as the program leader in games played (223), hits (271), runs scored (170), and triples (11).
Niagara’s Matthew Brash was named MAAC Pitcher of the Year, the first in program history for the Purple Eagles. Brash set both the Niagara and MAAC single-season strikeout record with 121, which was also 10
th in the NCAA at the conclusion of the regular season. The junior finished the year with a 2.43 ERA, which was the best in the MAAC and second-best in Niagara history. Brash was selected by the San Diego Padres with the 113
th overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, the second-highest drafted player in Niagara history.
Quinnipiac’s Andre Marrero was another All-MAAC First Team selection this year. Marrero finished the season with the second-highest number of stolen bases in the MAAC with 20, and led the MAAC in total bases with 126. The junior finished 2019 fifth in the league in RBIs with 48 and tied for fourth in home runs with 10.
The ABCA/Rawlings All-Region teams are voted on by members of the American Baseball Coaches Association and the process is led by the ABCA NCAA Div. I All-America Committee, which is chaired by Tommy Raffo of Arkansas State University.
