DETROIT (6/22/2019) -- University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse senior Matthew Vangalen continues to make history as the record-breaking attackman was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division I Men's At-Large teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA).

Vangalen - who owns a 3.96 GPA in Accounting & Finance - earned a spot on the At-Large Third Team and is the first-ever Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse player to be named an Academic All-American and the third Titan this year joining softball's Ashley Mauser and Jordan Manno.

Vangalen was one of just three men's lacrosse players in Division I to receive the prestigious honor along with Brown's Phil Goss (First Team) and Lehigh's Conor Gaffney (Third Team).

The Canadian attackman had a great season in his final collegiate campaign as he topped the MAAC and was 13th in the country with 2.40 assists per game, while also finishing third in the conference and 51st in the nation with 3.67 points per game. He raised his own school record to 55 points on the year on another school record 36 assists to go with 19 goals.

In his three years wearing the red, white and blue, he set the school record for assists with 77, was third in school history with 76 goals and second with 153 points.

The Google Cloud Academic All-America® program for At-Large teams is one of the toughest academic accolades to earn in the country as it combines student-athletes from fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming & diving, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.

No less than 40 of 47 members of the Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division I Men's At-Large teams have at least a 3.90 GPA, with 29 student-athletes maintaining a 4.00 GPA (or better) as either undergraduate or graduate students.
