Monmouth & Quinnipiac Capture 2019 MAAC Pepsi Zero Commissioner’s Cups
EDISON, NJ – Monmouth University has claimed the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Overall Commissioner’s Cup for the fifth consecutive year. The Hawks also earned their second straight Women’s Cup. On the men’s side, Quinnipiac University won the cup for the first time in school history.
“I would like to congratulate Monmouth University, Athletic Director Marilyn McNeil, its student-athletes, coaches and administrators in winning the 2018-2019 Overall Commissioner’s Cup and Women’s Commissioner’s Cup,” noted MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor. “Monmouth’s overall athletic program has exceled and has proven to be a winning institution since its first season in the league in 2013 by claiming its fifth consecutive Overall Commissioner’s Cup and second straight Women’s Commissioner’s Cup. Winning for the fifth consecutive time reinforces the view that Monmouth has a deep and talented athletic program. Quinnipiac University is also to be congratulated on winning its first ever Men’s Commissioner’s Cup,” noted Ensor. “That achievement was finalized with the Bobcats capturing its first ever MAAC Baseball Championship this past weekend.”
The MAAC Pepsi Zero Commissioner’s Cup is awarded annually as a symbol of overall excellence in athletics in the 24 championships conducted within the MAAC. Each institution is scored in all regular seasons and championships that it fields a varsity team. Only the scores from Men’s & Women’s Basketball, plus the top six men’s and top six women’s scores are used to determine an institution’s total points.
During the 2018-19 campaign, Monmouth won eight MAAC Championships (field hockey, women’s soccer, men’s & women’s indoor track & field, men’s tennis, men’s & women’s outdoor track & field and softball), three MAAC Regular Season titles (field hockey, women’s soccer, and men’s tennis), and shared one MAAC Regular Season title (softball) to aid in claiming its fifth Overall Commissioner’s Cup and its second Women’s Cup. Monmouth has now claimed eleven cups (four men’s, two women’s, and five overall) in the last six years.
“Monmouth is thrilled to win both the Overall and the Women’s Commissioner Cups,” Monmouth University Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Marilyn McNeil said. “Our female student-athletes dominated in several sports and it is a tribute to their hard work and competitiveness. As a program our overall goal is to be at the top of the MAAC in each of our sports, and for the most part we have succeeded. Hats off to our student-athletes and their coaches.”
Quinnipiac University won the Men’s Cup, its first ever (men’s, women’s, and overall) since joining the conference in 2013. The Bobcats won one MAAC Championship (baseball) and earned a share of MAAC Baseball Regular Season title amongst many other strong performances in cross country, soccer, basketball, lacrosse, and tennis.
“I would like to congratulate the coaches and student athletes of our men’s programs who contributed to winning the MAAC Commissioner’s Cup,” Quinnipiac Director of Athletics, Greg Amodio said. “It takes a collective effort to achieve this milestone and it clearly demonstrates the commitment to excellence shared throughout our University and the entire athletic department.”
In the overall standings, Monmouth finished first with a total of 156.00 points, followed by Marist College in second place with 142.50 points, and Quinnipiac in third place with 136.75 points.
