MAAC Women’s Soccer Kicks Off Conference Play
EDISON, N.J. (Sept. 20, 2019) – The conference portion of the 2019 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) women’s soccer season is set to begin this weekend. All MAAC teams will be in action over the course of the weekend, with 10 set to face conference opponents.
Conference play kicks off Saturday afternoon with Niagara University at Fairfield University and Monmouth University and Saint Peter’s University at 12:00 p.m. The Purple Eagles finished 2018 as the No. 4 seed in the MAAC Championship before falling in the semifinals. Niagara’s Kelsey Araujo and Annie Ibey were named to the 2019 Preseason All-MAAC Team. The Monmouth Hawks start 2019 conference play as three-time defending MAAC Champions. A conference-high seven Hawks were named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team, including the 2018 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year Madie Gibson and Defensive Player of the Year Jess Johnson.
Siena College at Rider University and Quinnipiac University at Canisius College both kick off at 1:00 p.m. The Saints made the MAAC Championship game last season for the first time since they won it all in 2015. The team returns the 2018 MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year in Taylor Dorado. Quinnipiac enters 2019 ranked No. 2 in the Preseason Coaches’ Poll, led by Preseason All-MAAC selection Selena Salas. The Bobcats will look to claim their first ever MAAC Championship.
Rounding out conference play action on Sunday is Iona College at Marist College at 2:00 p.m. Manhattan College faces off against Merrimack College at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, with the team’s first conference matchup scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 28 at home against Canisius.
