Fairfield’s Hakes and Iona’s Finch Named Hercules Tires MAAC Student Athletes of the Week
EDISON, N.J. (Oct. 21, 2020) –Fairfield University’s Rachel Hakes and Iona College’s Gabriel Finch have been named the Hercules Tires Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Student Athletes of the Week.

Women’s Basketball
As a member of Fairfield’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Executive Board, Rachel Hakes assumed a leadership role in the Stags’ voter registration initiative. On Oct. 1, Fairfield achieved 100% voter registration among all eligible U.S. voters on all 20 varsity teams.
Hakes will be a tri-captain for Fairfield Women’s Basketball for the second straight season in 2020-21. As a sophomore last winter, she ranked 10th in the MAAC in assists per game (3.2) and second in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.0). A starter in the backcourt in 29 of 30 games, Hakes filled out her stat line with 4.8 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. The Stags finished third in the MAAC regular season in 2019-20 – a significant boost from a ninth-place finish in the prior campaign – and advanced to the MAAC Championship Semifinals prior to the cancellation of the tournament.
In the classroom, Hakes is a Dean’s List student as a Finance major in Fairfield’s Charles F. Dolan School of Business.
Gabriel Finch
Iona College
Men’s Swimming and Diving
Gabriel Finch is a senior on the Iona men's swimming and diving team and serves as the Vice President of Iona's Student Athlete Advisory Committee. Finch has competed at the MAAC Championships in each of his three seasons at Iona, twice qualifying for the CSCAA National Invitational. Last season, Finch's 24.27 clocking as the relay leadoff in the 50-backstroke at the MAAC Championships qualified him for the CSCAA National Invitational. Finch has also earned MAAC All-Academic Team honors and contributed to Iona being named a CSCAA Scholar All-America Team.
