Jasper Teams Reach 100% Voter Registration
Riverdale, NY - Manhattan Athletics' 19 programs have reached their goal of 100 percent voter registration of eligible student-athletes ahead of the 2020 U.S. election. The voter registration drive, spearheaded by Manhattan's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), was part of the MAAC SAAC Voter Registration Initiative, launched earlier this year to ensure that all student-athletes have the ability and means to exercise their right to vote.
"I am so proud of our teams for all registering to vote," said Manhattan SAAC President Emma Kindblom, a senior on the softball team. "This initiative allowed us to educate ourselves about our civic duties as U.S. citizens, and urge our athletes to use their voices by participating in the election process."
While ensuring all MAAC student-athletes are registered to vote was a main pillar of the initiative, the drive has also focused on obtaining absentee ballots for those who will be away from their voting district on Election Day, and allowing access to vote to all those who wish to vote in person this year. In September, the NCAA also approved new legislation granting student-athletes a day off from mandatory activities on Election Day, a proposal that came from the Division I SAAC, the first of its kind.
The Voter Registration Initiative also falls under the umbrella of the MAAC United for Justice campaign, launched in August as a pledge by the conference and all MAAC schools to advance and execute strategies to combat racial injustices, to make conscious efforts to promote education and raise awareness of social issues, and to commit to making lasting change.
