Rider Athletics Earns Rawlings Community Spotlight Honors
EDISON, N.J. (Oct. 29, 2020) – The Rawlings Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Community Spotlight is a weekly feature of those giving back in an effort to make a difference in their communities. This week, the MAAC highlights Rider University Athletics.
Rider Athletics has launched Broncs For “CHANGE” with goals of providing guidance and support for current student-athletes, coaches and staff. The task force seeks to provide education, advocacy and training, communication, promotion and marketing, civic engagement and programming and create impactful action.
The CHANGE acronym stands for Combating Hatred, Healing, Advocating, Nourishing, Guiding and Educating. The task force plans to take the steps of enhancing departmental training and programming to include Title IX, cultural awareness and competency and sensitivity training, establishing formal departmental procedures for reporting misconduct, racism and discrimination, promoting community engagement initiatives and programming focused on diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice, sharing information with all student-athletes, staff and coaches pertaining to safe space on campus to promote healing, and implementing a voter registration campaign and Election Day partnerships.
To date, this group did a t-shirt giveaway in conjunction with the University’s “On Wednesday’s We Wear Cranberry” weekly campaign. The group has also planned a topical discussion around the movie “Fruitvale Station” with the task force before holding a campus-wide event in the spring to show and discuss the movie and its impact. The group has also been behind voting initiatives the department has undertaken to register Rider’s athletic teams to vote and provide information on how to vote.
