Siena Athletics Earns Rawlings Community Spotlight Honors
EDISON, N.J. (Nov. 12, 2020) – The Rawlings Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Community Spotlight is a weekly feature of those giving back in an effort to make a difference in their communities. This week, the MAAC highlights Siena Athletics.
Siena Athletics is pleased to announce the creation of a new committee entitled E.D.I.T., which stands for Education, Diversity, Inclusion, and Togetherness. Comprised of 18 Siena student athletes, coaches, and administrators, E.D.I.T. is a movement focused on engaging in healthy conversation to help bring about awareness and create meaningful change through social justice initiatives.
"The reason that I joined E.D.I.T. was because as a minority, being black, and a woman, I think that it's important that we create a safe space and environment that promotes healthy conversation and education, especially in regard to the climate that we do live in today," said volleyball senior Dakota Jackson.
The mission of E.D.I.T. is to foster a more cohesive and stronger community by encouraging meaningful conversation about social justice in a safe environment between individuals from different backgrounds and various perspectives which promotes advocacy and celebrates diversity.
"I joined E.D.I.T. because I believe in the power behind exploring one another's differences, and learning to turn those conversations into learning experiences," explained water polo junior Georgia Vargas. "I hope you'll join us in this movement. After all, we truly are the voices of the future, and it's so important that we continue to build each other up, and encourage a community of transparency and support."
The goal of E.D.I.T. is for Siena's student athletes, coaches, and administrators to draw from their various diverse backgrounds and use their platform as leaders on campus to foster a more inclusive community.
E.D.I.T. has formed three sub-committees to help achieve their mission. The Community Outreach Committee is tasked with finding opportunities in the surrounding area where E.D.I.T. can spread their message as a group to help foster change in the Capital Region. The goal of the Campus Involvement Committee is to play an active role in on-campus activities while facilitating events and opportunities for the Siena community. The Social Media and Events Committee is a group which will run the group's Instagram page – saints_e.d.i.t – and facilitate how events and messages are spread.
