Monmouth’s Blamon Named Chair of Newly Formed MAAC SAAC Social Justice Committee
EDISON, N.J. (Nov 30, 2020) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) announced today the appointment of Monmouth University’s Prisca Blamon as Chair of the newly formed Social Justice Committee. The MAAC SAAC Social Justice Committee was established to combat racial inequality, promote gender equity, and create a more inclusive environment. Blamon, a senior, is a member of Monmouth’s women’s track and field program.
The MAAC SAAC Social Justice subcommittee will look to:
- Empower the voices of our minority student-athletes.
- Allow student-athletes to raise issues for group discussion.
- Raise awareness and educate others on meaningful causes that create long-lasting social change.
- Work with MAAC coaches and administrators in promoting a more inclusive conference.
The Social Justice Committee, comprised of one student-athlete per institution on a rotating basis, will work closely together on projects to help their communities and create an inclusive environment. Their ideas and findings will be presented to the entire MAAC SAAC group in monthly meetings. “I am very excited to be working with Turner, Jamie, and the SAAC Executive Board serving as the Social Justice Committee Chair,” said Blamon. “I am looking forward to not only promoting empowerment for minority students, but also making others aware of the challenges that athletes that look like me face to create change in our environment, campus and conference.”
“Prisca is the first ever MAAC SAAC Social Justice Chair, and Jamie [Smith] and I are really excited for the role she will play in the commitment that the MAAC, and MAAC SAAC, set with the United for Justice Campaign.” said MAAC SAAC Chair Turner Dirrigl of Canisius College.
“Turner and I are thrilled to have Prisca join the MAAC SAAC Executive Board as our first ever Social Justice Chair,” add MAAC SAAC Vice-Chair Jamie Smith of Iona College. “I am excited to see the direction that Prisca will take the Social Justice Committee and I look forward to collaborating with student-athletes, conference-wide to foster a more inclusive environment in the MAAC.”
