MAAC Hoops December Update
EDISON, N.J. (Dec. 23, 2020) – Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) basketball has made its way through two weeks of conference play, with more conference and non-conference games scheduled before the start of the new year.
Men's Basketball:
Iona College, Marist College and Saint Peter's University currently sit atop the MAAC standings, all going 3-1 to begin conference play. Niagara University sits behind with a 2-2 mark, followed by Canisius College and Monmouth University with a 1-1 MAAC record. Fairfield University, Manhattan College and Rider University began the season going 1-3, while Quinnipiac University and Siena College still have yet to see conference action.
Iona's Isaiah Ross leads the conference in scoring, averaging 21.43 points over seven games for the Gaels. Ross has been named MAAC Player of the Week two times to begin his senior season, collecting the award on Dec. 7 and 21. Ross is followed by the Monmouth duo of George Papas and Deion Hammond, who averaged 20.33 points for the Hawks over two games.
Three games are scheduled for today before a three-day hiatus for the Christmas break. Today's games include:
- NJIT @ Rider – 2:00 p.m. (Watch)
- Saint Peter's @ St. Francis Brooklyn – 2:00 p.m. (Watch)
- Coppin State vs. Iona – 7:00 p.m. (Watch)
Canisius and Monmouth kick off conference play after the holiday break with a pair of games on Dec. 27 and 28. Last season, the Hawks swept the Griffs with an 84-65 win at home and an 85-71 win in Buffalo. The Hawks have gone 1-1 in conference play to start the season, splitting their series with Saint Peter's last weekend. The Griffs also sit at 1-1 in conference play, splitting their weekend series with Marist.
Women's Basketball:
Saint Peter's sits atop the MAAC standings as the only team to begin conference play at 4-0. Marist and Fairfield also remain undefeated after their first series, both going 2-0. Manhattan comes in with a 3-1 mark, followed by Iona at 2-2 and Quinnipiac at 1-1. Siena (0-2), Canisius (0-4) and Rider (0-4) round out the standings, with Niagara and Monmouth yet to see conference action.
The Fairfield duo of Sam Lewis and Lou Lopez-Senechal lead the conference in scoring, with Lewis averaging 17.75 points and Lopez-Senechal averaging 16.75 through four games. Lewis claimed MAAC Player of the Week honors on Dec. 14, Lopez-Senechal claimed the honor on Dec. 7. They are followed by Marist's Sarah Barcello and Siena's Isis Young (16.0 ppg) and Quinnipiac's Mikala Morris (15.0 ppg). Marist's Caitlin Weimar has made an immediate impact as the league's top rookie, collecting MAAC Rookie of the Week honors three weeks in a row – averaging 12.5 points and 7.5 rebounds over four games for the Red Foxes.
Two games are scheduled for today to wrap up the 2020 portion of the schedule. Today's games include:
