OVERLAND PARK, KS – Senior pitcher Marnie Skinner was announced as one of the 30 finalists for the 2020 Senior CLASS Award earlier this morning. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Skinner is a biochemistry major and currently holds a 3.85 cumulative grade point average. On the field, the senior earned postseason honors in each of her first two seasons and most recently was a 2019 Preseason All-MAAC Selection. Skinner has won at least nine games in each of the past two seasons.
Off of the field, Skinner attended the American Chemical Society Conference in San Diego, California this past summer and presented her work in the fundamental research in colloids, surfaces and nanomaterials poster presentation session. She received an award for her outstanding presentation skills. The Moses Lake, Washington native also recently presented her thesis, "Effects of Graphene Oxide on Water Permeability across Lipid Bilayers", as part of Iona College's Honors Thesis Day.
"Marnie is a true leader in our program. She is someone that the coaching staff can always count on to bring out the best in her teammates and to work her absolute hardest. Her teammates rely on her to be a calming presence in the dugout and dominant force in the circle," head coach
Katie Jansson noted about her senior pitcher. "Marnie puts the needs of the team before her own and wants to see her teammates succeed. Her positive attitude, as well as incredible work ethic, have led her to all the success and recognition she has received."
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists later in the season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
