Canisius vs. Quinnipiac Men’s Basketball Set to Air on ESPNU
Hamden, Conn. (Feb. 4, 2020) – Canisius College (9-13, 4-7 MAAC) travels to Hamden, Connecticut to take on Quinnipiac University (11-9, 6-4 MAAC) on Feb. 21 at 7:00 p.m. The Friday night matchup is set to air on ESPNU as part of the MAAC Wildcard Game package.
Canisius looks to avenge its Jan. 31 loss at home to Quinnipiac. The Bobcats won that contest 90-73 behind a game-high 26 points from sophomore Tyrese Williams.
Quinnipiac currently sits in third in the conference standings behind Monmouth University and Saint Peter’s University. Junior Rich Kelly, a Preseason All-MAAC First Team selection, has been leading the way for the Bobcats all season. Kelly now ranks second in the MAAC in scoring with 17.1 points per game, narrowly behind league-leader E.J. Crawford (17.3). Redshirt Junior Kevin Marfo leads the country in rebounds per game (13.6) and has recorded a double-double in 12 of 20 games (t-8
th in the NCAA) so far this season for the Bobcats.
The Griffs snapped a three-game losing skid with a victory over Marist College on Sunday, Feb. 2 to get back in the win column. Senior Malik Johnson is averaging a team-high 13.1 points to go along with his league-leading 6.3 assists. Johnson is one of only two players to collect MAAC Player of the Week honors twice this season. Freshman Jacco Fritz also leads the way for the rookies with three selections.
The wildcard format allows ESPN to pick any game scheduled for that specific date to air on ESPNU and allows the MAAC and ESPN the flexibility to showcase the best matchups as the season progresses. The matchup for the final wildcard game on Feb. 28 will be announced at a later date.
The regular season culminates with the 2020 MAAC Basketball Championships in the event’s inaugural year at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey from March 10-14.
