Lawrenceville, N.J. (Feb. 7, 2020) – Monmouth University (13-9, 7-4 MAAC) takes the short trip to Lawrenceville, New Jersey to take on in-state rival Rider University (12-9, 6-5 MAAC) on Feb. 28 at 9:00 p.m. The Friday night matchup is set to air on ESPNU as part of the MAAC Wildcard Game package.

Heading into the weekend, Monmouth sits tied with Saint Peter’s University for first place in the league. Rider currently ranks tied for fourth after dropping its last game at Monmouth on Feb. 2.

The Hawks have two of the league’s top-five leading scorers in Deion Hammond (16.0 ppg – 3rd) and Ray Salnave (14.8 ppg – 5th). The duo also ranks in the first five in free throw percentage, with Salnave shooting 87.4 percent (2nd) from the line and Hammond following behind at 83.6 percent (5th). Monmouth looks to defend its 8-0 home record when it hosts Saint Peter’s next on Sunday, Feb. 9.

The Broncs have four scorers averaging double-digits in Dimencio Vaughn (14.3), Frederick Scott (12.8), Tyere Marshall (12.8) and Stevie Jordan (11.7). Vaughn comes off a 28-point performance against the Hawks that helped him garner MAAC Player of the Week honors. Rider is back in action tonight at home against Canisius College.

The wildcard format allows ESPN to pick any game scheduled for that specific date to air on ESPNU and allows the MAAC and ESPN the flexibility to showcase the best matchups as the season progresses.

The regular season culminates with the 2020 MAAC Basketball Championships in the event’s inaugural year at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey from March 10-14.  The Garden State will be home to the MAAC Basketball Championships for the first time since 2003.
