Stage is Set for Inaugural New Jersey Army National Guard 2020 MAAC Esports Championships
Atlantic City, N.J. (March 2, 2020) – The first annual New Jersey Army National Guard 2020 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Esports Championships are set to begin March 13 in the Adrian Phillips Theater at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
The two-day event will feature seven MAAC schools – Canisius College, Manhattan College, Marist College, Niagara University, Quinnipiac University, Saint Peter’s University and Siena College. Teams will compete in four different games – League of Legends, Overwatch, Rocket League, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (SSBU) presented in partnership with the Electronic Gaming Federation (EGF). The MAAC champion from League of Legends will be seeded directly into the quarterfinals of the Riot College League of Legends Championship and will compete for the chance to win scholarships and a national title. Winners of Rocket League and SSBU tournaments gain an automatic bid to EGF national tournaments.
Marist current sits in first place among MAAC schools in the regular season for Rocket League with two wins and two losses. Siena and Quinnipiac follow, both a win and two losses. Canisius falls in fourth with a single win and three losses. Manhattan and Niagara round out the field, both registering three losses.
In SSBU, four teams in Siena, Saint Peter’s, Canisius and Marist sit atop the leaderboards with three wins and a loss. Manhattan follows with two wins and two losses, with Niagara (1-3) and Quinnipiac (0-3) falling in seventh and eighth respectively.
The EGF, the official governing body for major colleges, high school and youth esport leagues, in addition to running the Rocket League and SSBU tournaments for the MAAC, will also conduct a high school invitational. The EGF will produce a high school regional focused on those schools located in the region surrounding Atlantic City (Connecticut, Delaware, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania). Participating teams will be announced this coming week. The MAAC becomes the first conference to have joint college and high school events.

The official schedule for the 2020 Championships can be found below. Championship matches will be held on Saturday, March 14 with League of Legends (4:30 p.m.) and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (7:45 p.m.) taking place on stage one and Overwatch (6:30 p.m.) and Rocket League (8:15 p.m.) taking place on stage two.
