MAAC Baseball Championship in Staten Island Extended Through 2024 Season
Edison, N.J. (March 26, 2020) – With the cancellation of the 2020 spring sports championships throughout the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and the NCAA due to the COVID–19 pandemic, the MAAC announced today a contract extension with the Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George to host the MAAC Baseball Championship through the 2024 season. Richmond County Bank Ballpark, the home of the Staten Island Yankees, has hosted the MAAC Championship the past two years.
“Although the spring season has not gone as planned, the MAAC is excited to continue our partnership with the Staten Island Yankees and Richmond County Bank Ballpark,” said MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor. “Staten Island presents our student-athletes with a professional facility unparallel to other sites, so we are excited to extend our agreement through the 2024 season.”
Quinnipiac University claimed the school’s first MAAC Championship last May with a 6-5 win over Fairfield University in 13 innings. Evan Vulgamore scored the championship-winning run in the bottom of the 13th on a wild pitch with the bases loaded. Canisius College captured the first ever MAAC Championship in Staten Island the year prior, defeating Monmouth University 11-0.
Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George gives MAAC student-athletes the opportunity to play on a professionally maintained field. The venue has served as the home of the Staten Island Yankees since 2001, and is known for its quality as well as the picturesque view of Manhattan in right-center field.
