2020 Hercules Tires MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship Field Set
Edison, N.J. (March 7, 2019) – The field is set for the 2020 Hercules Tires MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship. The 11-team tournament will take place from March 10-14 in the event’s inaugural year at Atlantic City’s Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall.
The top-five teams in the bracket all earn a bye in the first round. Rider University (25-4, 18-2 MAAC) will enter the championship as the league’s top seed after winning a tiebreaker with preseason favorite Marist College (25-4, 18-2). The two Co-Regular Season Champions split their head to head matchups earlier in the year, but a Marist loss to Fairfield University (15-14, 12-8) on Jan. 30 gives the seeding advantage to the Broncs, per the MAAC tiebreaker policy.
First round action begins on Tuesday, March 10 with No. 8 Niagara University (9-20, 7-13) taking on No. 9 Saint Peter’s (9-20, 6-14) at 9:30 a.m. The Purple Eagles will look for the season sweep of the Peacocks after winning the two previous matchups this year. The winner of the early morning matchup will move on to face top-seeded Rider Wednesday at 1:00 p.m.
Tuesday action continues with No. 7 Iona College (9-20, 8-12) taking on No. 10 Monmouth (8-21, 5-15) at 11:30 a.m. In the two regular season matchups between the Gaels and the Hawks, the away team was able to walk away victorious. The winner will move on to face No. 2 Marist on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
The final opening day game will consist of No. 6 Siena College (10-19, 8-12) and No. 11 Canisius College (4-16, 5-24). The Saint got the better of the Griffs in both regular season matchups and will look for the season sweep. The winner of Tuesday’s final game will move on to face No. 3 Fairfield Thursday at 12:00 p.m.
No. 4 Manhattan College (15-14, 12-8) will play No. 5 Quinnipiac (15-14, 12-8) on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in the final quarterfinal game. The Jaspers and Bobcats split their in-season matchups this year, both collecting wins at home.
All games of the 2020 Hercules Tires MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship will be broadcasted on ESPN3, with the exception of the championship game on Saturday, March 10 at 11:00 a.m., which will be broadcasted on ESPNNews.
