2020 Women’s Basketball All-Rookie Team Announced
Atlantic City, N.J. (March 9, 2019) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) has announced its 2020 Women’s Basketball All-Rookie Team. The All-Rookie Team is voted on by the league’s 11 head coaches.
The All-MAAC Rookie Team is made up of Manhattan College’s Emily LaPointe, Niagara University’s Adia Brisker, Iona College’s Paulla Weekes, and Quinnipiac University’s Cur’Tiera Haywood and Mikala Morris. LaPointe, Brisker, Haywood and Morris were all unanimous selections.
Emily LaPointe led the league in Pepsi Zero MAAC Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week awards, collecting eight on the season. The standout freshman led the rookie class and the Jaspers in scoring, knocking down 12.5 a game. In 29 games of action, LaPointe started 26 for Manhattan while averaging 3.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.1 steals, and 30.7 minutes on the court.
Quinnipiac’s Cur’Tiera Haywood and Mikala Morris stepped in as rookies for a Bobcats team that graduated five starters from the previous season. Morris ranked third on the team with 9.7 points per game, starting in 15 games. The Springfield, Ohio native collected four Pepsi Zero MAAC Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week awards, ranking second only to Manhattan’s LaPointe. Haywood proved to be a responsible shooter for the Bobcats, leading the team with a .467 shooting percentage. Haywood was responsible for averaging 7.8 points per night, along with 3.7 rebounds, 21.3 minutes, and a .371 shooting percentage from beyond the arc.
Niagara’s Adia Brisker started the year off on a strong note as the league’s first Rookie of the Week in the 2019-20 season, following with two more honors throughout the season. In 29 games, Brisker started 27 for the Purple Eagles while averaging 7.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.1 assists and steals. Her 4.9 rebounds per contest ranked second on the team, only behind teammate Emerald Ekpiteta.
Paulla Weekes stood out as the top rookie for the Gaels this year after missing the entirety of the 2018-19 season to injury. Weekes put up 4.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.1 steals on average throughout the season, being named Rookie of the Week once on Feb. 10. Weekes started and played 31 minutes in a 69-59 win over Saint Peter’s on Jan 20. in which she scored a season-high 13 points in the win.
