Marist Claims MAAC League of Legends Esports Championship

Edison, N.J. (April 17, 2020) – Marist College defeated Saint Peter’s University 2-1 to claim the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) League of Legends Championship, the first to be completed of the 2020 MAAC Esports Championships presented by New Jersey Army National Guard. The title win marks the first in MAAC Esports Championship history.

The Red Foxes kicked off their championship run by defeating Siena College earlier in the day, 2-0. Marist received a first-round bye as the top seed in the League of Legends bracket. Marist jumped out to an early 1-0 series lead before Saint Peter’s forced a decisive game three. The Red Foxes were able to seal the victory in the final game, securing the championship, off the efforts of Ryan Millet. Millet was named the 2020 MAAC Esports League of Legends MVP.

Saint Peter’s began its evening with a 2-0 win over Niagara University to advance to the championship game. Considered the underdog against the Red Foxes, the Peacocks forced a third and final game after a strong push in game two. The Peacocks were able to stay within striking distance of the Red Foxes for the entirety of the final match, one of the closest games of the championships thus far.

The Rocket League Bracket will kick off Saturday’s MAAC Esports action, beginning at 11:00 a.m. Games are scheduled for every half-hour, with the championship scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate bracket will begin at 2:00 p.m. with No. 2 Saint Peter’s facing No. 7 Quinnipiac. Games are scheduled to begin every hour and 15 minutes, with the championship being held at 8:15 p.m. All games of the 2020 MAAC Esports Championships presented by New Jersey National Guard can be streamed live at Twitch.tv/officialEGF.
