Marist Claims MAAC Rocket League Esports Championship
Edison, N.J. (April 18, 2020) – Marist College defeated Canisius College 4-0 to claim the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rocket League Championship, the second to be completed of the 2020 MAAC Esports Championships presented by New Jersey Army National Guard. The Red Foxes won the best-of-seven series 3-1, 3-0, 6-2, 3-1. The Marist Esports team also claimed last night’s League of Legends MAAC Esports title.
The title marks the second of the 2020 MAAC Esports Championships presented by New Jersey Army National Guard, and the first MAAC Esports Rocket League Championship in history.
Marist’s championship run began with a sweep of No. 3 Quinnipiac University in the semifinals. The Red Foxes took down the Bobcats 3-1, 5-3, 5-2 en route to the championship series. By sweeping the Griffs, the Red Foxes completed the perfect tournament by not losing a single game.
Marist’s Anthony “Tones” Gandini was named the 2020 New Jersey Army National Guard MAAC Esports Rocket League MVP.
Canisius’ run to the finals began with a mid-afternoon victory over Niagara University. The Griffs won a close first game 1-0, followed by another one-goal game with a 2-1 victory. The Canisius offense awoke in game three, outscoring the Purple Eagles 6-1.
The first match of the day came between No. 4 Quinnipiac and No. 5 Siena College. The Bobcats swept the Saints, winning 5-1, 4-0, 4-1. The matchup was moved to the first of the day after Niagara advanced out of the first round due to a disqualification to No. 3 Manhattan College for failing to report on time.
The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate bracket begins today at 2:00 p.m. with No. 2 Saint Peter’s facing No. 7 Quinnipiac. Games are scheduled to begin every hour and 15 minutes, with the championship being held at 8:15 p.m. Overwatch action is set for Monday April 20 and Friday April 24.
