Edison, N.J. (April 20, 2020) – Marist College has been named the 2020 MAAC Esports Program of the Year, as announced by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). The Program of the Year award is based off of results from the regular season.

“The Program of the Year award recognizes the institution’s esports efforts throughout the academic year,” said MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor. “The MAAC congratulates Marist College on this well-deserved honor. This recognition was earned through countless hours of preparation, hard work, and a community of students and administrators coming together to strive for success. In a year where sports have been so dramatically impacted, the value of esports to Division I conferences and institutions has never been higher. The MAAC again congratulates Marist College on its commitment to esports.”

Marist finished as the top seed in League of Legends and Rocket League, and as the fifth seed in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The final standings garnered the Red Foxes 15 total points towards the Program of the Year standings. Canisius College followed in second with 13 points, Saint Peter’s University rounded out the top three with 11 points.

“As with all clubs at Marist, students provide leadership and direction,” said Julie Byron, Marist College Coordinator of Intramurals/Club Sports/Camps. “Experienced junior captains DJ DeVera and Damion Neth provided great insight and communication when competition began in the fall. Tarik Narma, Erick Latshaw, and Tim Schindler then stepped into leadership roles, and their efforts were integral in the planning of the MAAC Tournament – first in Atlantic City, and then from remote sites.”

“I would like to thank Vice President and Dean for Student Affairs Deb DiCaprio, Director of Athletics Tim Murray, and Dean of Computer Science and Mathematics Roger Norton for their support,” Byron went on to say. “Our success is satisfying to everyone associated with our program.”

The Marist program claimed the MAAC title in both League of Legends and Rocket League this past weekend in the 2020 MAAC Esports Championships presented by New Jersey Army National Guard. The Red Foxes also made the grand finals in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate bracket. Marist was the top seed in both League of Legends and Rocket League, the Red Foxes were the conference’s fifth seed in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
