Edison, N.J. (April 10, 2020) – The BSN Sports MAAC Community Spotlight will be a weekly feature of those giving back in an effort to make a difference in their communities. This week, Quinnipiac volleyball graduating senior Kaleigh Oates is helping residents of Hamden, Connecticut who may need assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Oates made a post on Nextdoor, an app which allows neighbors to keep in touch and post about relevant news in the community. In the post she said that herself and her roommates are Quinnipiac students, still residing in Hamden and looking for ways to help out during this rough time. She posted that they would be willing to go grocery shopping, pick up prescriptions, etc. for anyone who is elderly, immunocompromised or just doesn't feel comfortable going to the store.

The post gained a lot of traction with about 60 comments of people needing or knowing others who need help, as well as many messages of support. Since then, she has been in contact with about 10-15 people who need help. “Many residents don't have family in the area and have extreme anxiety and fear about leaving their house,” said Oates.

They have talked to many elderly people on the phone and many of these conversations have gone on pretty long just talking about the whole situation and life in general. Oates said “It's kind of cool because it's like I have a few adopted grandparents.”
