MAAC Renews Contract with Erie Community College – Burt Flickinger Athletic Center
Buffalo, NY (May 19, 2020) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) announced today the renewal of its contract with Erie Community College – Burt Flickinger Athletic Center, home of the MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships. The new contract will begin in 2021 and extend through the 2023 championships.
“Canisius athletics is proud to extend our partnership with the MAAC, the City of Buffalo, Erie Community College and the Buffalo/Niagara Sports Commission, as we continue to bring the MAAC’s Swimming and Diving Championships to the Burt Flickinger Center Pool,” Lisa Liotta, Canisius Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator said. “This is a remarkable and unique championship that truly embodies the competitive spirit of athletics. It is our pleasure to serve as co-host of this championship while helping to continue to provide a positive economic impact on Western New York.”
The Burt Flickinger Athletic Center has been home to the MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships since 2011, hosting the previous 10-consecutive events. Rider University took home the 2020 men’s title this season for the ninth-straight year. Fairfield University secured the 2020 women’s title for the third-straight year.
“We are very excited to see the MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships stay in Western New York,” said Niagara University Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator Dedra Palmer. “Erie Community College offers a great facility and championship experience for our student-athletes and we look forward to continuing our partnership for years to come.”
The Burt Flickinger Athletic Center opened as a legacy to the World University Games in June of 1994. The facility houses an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a 25-meter warm-up pool, three regulation basketball courts, a large field house which seats 3,000, a 1/9-mile indoor jogging track and a Wellness Center.
“The city of Buffalo and Erie Community College goes above and beyond to welcome us,” said Fairfield University Swimming and Diving Head Coach Anthony Bruno. “Just having a facility that can hold everyone does not make a successful championship. A critical part of the championship experience is the venue’s championship atmosphere and the people running it. Canisius and the MAAC have done a phenomenal job as hosts putting together a professional meet management staff for our championships.”
