LOUISVILLE, Ky. (6/29/2020) -- University of Detroit Mercy senior Alex Akins earned one of the highest academic awards in lacrosse as he was named to the USILA/Warrior and New Balance Division I Scholar All-American Team.

He was one of only two players in the MAAC to be honored, joining Marist's Peyton Smith. Akins is also the fourth Titan to ever earn the academic distinction after Jordan Houtby (2013), Paul Bitetti (2016) and Matthew Vangalen (2019).

Akins, who owns a 3.94 GPA in Business Management, is a three-time All-MAAC honoree as well as a member of the MAAC All-Rookie Team as a freshman. One of the top defensemen in the league, he is currently sixth in school history with 44 caused turnovers.

He is also a four-time member of the Detroit Mercy Athletic Director's Honor Roll and a three-time member of the MAAC Academic Honor Roll and the MAAC All-Academic Team (2018, 2019, 2020).

A two-time team captain, Akins will be returning to lead the Titan defense in 2021.
