Edison, N.J. (Aug. 10, 2020) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) announced today its first-ever Voter Registration Initiative for the summer and fall of 2020. The goal of the Voter Registration Initiative is to ensure all student-athletes have the ability and means to exercise their right to vote come Election Day.

The three main focuses of the campaign are:
  1. Ensuring all student-athletes are registered to vote.
  2. Obtaining absentee ballots for those who need them.
  3. Allowing access to all those who wish to vote in person.

MAAC SAAC will work with individual SAACs at each member institution in order to execute all three phases of the campaign. SAAC representatives will use MAACSports.com/Vote as a channel to give student-athletes all necessary information and useful tools for the upcoming election. In addition, SAAC members will use #MAACVotes as a means to spread their message on social media. The 2020 United States presidential election is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Student-athletes have a voice in the NCAA through advisory committees at the campus, conference, and national level. Each SAAC is made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience and offer input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes' lives on campus. For the 2020-21 year, Turner Dirrigl of Canisius College (Cross Country) will serve as SAAC Chair and Jamie Smith of Iona College (Volleyball) will serve as Vice Chair.

"Voting is one of the most important responsibilities U.S. citizens have," said Dirrigl. "It's a form of self-expression that impacts our communities and makes meaningful changes in our lives. We hope to see our student-athletes become further committed to civic engagement through the MAAC SAAC Voter Registration Initiative."

"We have a unique opportunity as student-athletes to use our platforms to promote positive change in this country," added Smith. "The Voter Registration Initiative aims to do just that by encouraging each of us to exercise our right to vote and to use our voices for impactful change."
