Niagara’s Zoe Gavin Earns Rawling’s Community Spotlight Honors
Niagara University, N.Y. (Sept. 24, 2020) – The Rawling’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Community Spotlight is a weekly feature of those giving back in an effort to make a difference in their communities. This week, the MAAC highlights Niagara’s Zoe Gavin.
Junior women’s swimming and diving captain Zoe Gavin is helping children across the country, and the world, with the community service project she recently participated in with Circle K, an international collegiate level service organization that is run in conjunction with the Kiwanis Club.
Gavin and her fellow club members, through the organization Love Letters for Literacy, created literacy packets that were distributed to preschoolers in low-income and underserved neighborhoods, both across the country and internationally. They made 26 literacy cards, one for each letter of the alphabet, with a hand written note and a list of educational games to go along with them. The goal is to help make learning the alphabet fun and to make the resources available for parents to help their children prepare for kindergarten.
“The pandemic has not stopped us from doing what we can for our community,” said Gavin. “Community service is something everyone should try to take part in at some point in their lives. Not only is it rewarding to know you are impacting someone’s life in a positive way, but it gives you a broader perspective of the challenges that some people in this world, and even in your own community, face every day.”
