EDISON, NJ (October 8, 2021) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) today announced the addition of Long Island University (LIU) to the MAAC Women’s Rowing League for their inaugural season in 2022-23.
“We’re excited that our newly added rowing program, led by head coach Jaclyn Smith, will have a home in the MAAC in 2023,” LIU athletic director Dr. William E. Martinov, Jr. said. “We have enjoyed being an associate member of the MAAC in water polo, and are pleased that rowing will get to join the family as well. The Sharks look forward to competing against some top-tier programs on the water, vying for a MAAC championship, and representing the conference at the highest level!”
The MAAC Council of Presidents unanimously voted to approve the associate membership of
LIU into the MAAC Women’s Rowing League.
“We are excited to announce the addition of LIU as our newest associate member in rowing,” Director of Women’s Basketball Operations Caitlin Lowe who oversees the MAAC Rowing Championships and
serves on the Division I Rowing Committee said. “LIU maintains a high academic and athletic standard that aligns with the current MAAC rowing membership. The launch of rowing at LIU will provide additional opportunities for female student-athletes and we look forward to providing them with a great championship experience when they participate in the MAAC Rowing Championship in future years.”
LIU adds Women’s Rowing as one of 35 athletic teams on two campuses located in Brooklyn and Brookville, N.Y. In LIU’s prestigious history, their NCAA Division I programs have combined for 23 national championships, 220 conference championships, and 379 All-Americans. The LIU Women’s Water Polo program also competes in the MAAC as an associate member.
“Being a part of the MAAC for the past ten years as both a student-athlete and as a coach, I can attest to the strength of the coaches and student-athletes that make up MAAC Rowing,” LIU Rowing Head Coach Jaclyn Smith said. “I am excited to get to get to work on building a team worthy enough to add great competition to what is already an outstanding conference."
Additionally,
Monmouth announced last week the addition of a Women’s Rowing Program which gives them 24 intercollegiate programs. Monmouth is a full-time member institution of the MAAC.
