Iona, Manhattan, and Niagara Win on Friday in MAAC Men’s Basketball Play

EDISON, NJ (Nov. 20, 2021) – Three Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s hoops squads playing in neutral site events snagged wins on Friday against non-conference opponents. In the MAAC/ASUN Challenge, hosted in the HP Field House at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at the Walt Disney World Resort in Kissimmee, FL, both Iona on Manhattan claimed grind out wins against ASUN foes, while Niagara got its first win in the 2021-22 campaign at the YSU/J. Arnold Wealth Management Company Basketball Tournament.

In a matchup between two teams ranked in the Top-10 in this week's CollegeInsider.com mid-major poll, Iona (No. 10) defeated defending ASUN champion Liberty (No. 4), 54-50. The Gaels overcame a 16-point first half deficit, earning another grind-it-out victory that improved their overall record to 4-0 on the season. Nelly Junior Joseph led the Gaels with a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double. Iona starts the season 4-0 for the first time since 2005-06 and the ninth time overall in program history.

Niagara toppled SIUE, 70-60, on Friday earning its first win of the season. The Purple Eagles used a strong second half, outscoring SIUE 46-30 in the second half. Marcus Hammond led the Purple Eagles in scoring with 16 points and Noah Thomasson added a career-high 15 points in the victory.
