Iona Upsets No. 10 Alabama on Thanksgiving Day

EDISON, NJ (Nov. 26, 2021) – Iona men’s basketball stunned No. 10 Alabama on Thursday night, earning the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s (MAAC) first ever win over an AP top-10 opponent.

The Iona College men's basketball team stunned No. 10 Alabama, 72-68 in the quarterfinal round of the 2021 ESPN Events Invitational at the Field House at ESPN's Wide World of Sports. The Gaels earned the program's fifth-ever win against a Top 25 team, their second against a Top 10 team and the first victory over a ranked team in 16 years. Five Gaels scored in double-figures, led by freshman Walter Clayton Jr. who scored 15 points. Nelly Junior Joseph followed with his second-double double in three games with 15 points and 11 rebounds; graduate Tyson Jolly had 13 points, graduate Elijah Joiner had 12 points, and junior Quinn Slazinski had 11 points. The Gaels improve to 6-0 on the season, the first time since 2005 and sixth overall time in program history.
