Second Half Outburst Leads to Comeback Wins for Iona and Manhattan in Non-Conference Men’s Basketball Play

Iona men's basketball erased a double-figure first half deficit and put together a 51-point second half en route to an 83-72 win over Delaware in non-conference action at UBS Arena on Tuesday. The Gaels trailed for the first 22 minutes of the contest before the comeback victory over the Colonial Athletic Association preseason favorite Blue Hens. Walter Clayton Jr. scored a career-high 21 points to lead four Gaels in double figures. Nelly Junior Joseph recorded his third straight double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds, Elijah Joiner scored 13 points and Tyson Jolly added 12 points.

Manhattan men’s basketball trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half and by six at intermission before earning a 77-74 win over The Citadel on Tuesday night to close the Cobb Dill & Hammett Classic. The victory improves the Jaspers record to 8-3, the best start for the program since 2013-14. Four Jaspers surpassed double digits scoring, led by a 20-point effort from Ant Nelson. Jose Perez followed with 18 points, Elijah Buchanan added 13 points, and Samba Diallo chipped in 10 points. Perez was named Tournament MVP while Josh Roberts was selected to the All-Tournament Team.
 
The 2021-22 campaign culminates with the 2022 Hercules Tires MAAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships from March 8-12 at Atlantic City's Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall.
