Staten Island, NY – Wagner College Director of Athletics Walt Hameline has announced that the university will be unable to participate in women's water polo during the 2021 season.

"We respect each student-athletes decision on competition this season, as the health and safety of our student-athletes remains our single greatest priority," said Hameline. "We feel for those that wanted to participate however due to the circumstances it just wouldn't be feasible."

Last year, the NCAA directed all member institutions to provide student-athletes with an option to "opt-out" of athletics participation due to concerns about COVID-19.

After a number of women's water polo players elected to opt-out of the 2021 season it became evident that Seahawks would not be able to compete.

Members of the team will remain enrolled in spring courses, either virtually or in-person, as full-time students. The women's water polo program will also retain access to the athletic department's support services.

Wagner College will additionally honor all athletic scholarships through the 2020-21 school year.
